New study determines AHP® is effective for use in disinfectant footmats

The first published report evaluating AHP® in a footmat application was recently released by researchers at Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The study concluded that AHP® based disinfectant footmats, effectively reduce the bacterial load on footwear in large-animal veterinary hospitals. Footbaths and footmats within room entrances are employed in many North American Veterinary Teaching Hospitals, to decrease the transmission of pathogenic microorganisms on contaminated footwear.
The study published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine (doi: 10.1111/jvim.14576), evaluated the use of four different disinfectants (AHP®, Phenolic, QUAT and VIRKON) applied to disinfectant footmats to reduce bacteria present on footwear after use in a contaminated large animal hospital stall. For AHP® testing, the footmats were soaked in 4.25% AHP® solution at a 1:16 dilution and underwent a 10 minute contact time before the boots were sampled and cultured. The cultures aimed to quantify the reduction in total number of viable bacteria and total number of viable coliform bacteria on boots. AHP® showed the greatest reduction in total bacteria counts compared to other disinfectants, with a 45% reduction. All the disinfectants revealed significant reductions in Gram-negative bacteria counts and AHP® specifically revealed a 35% reduction. The researchers suggest that disinfectant footmats can be used to decrease colony forming units (CFUs) for total bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria on the soles of overboots under conditions that stimulate use in a large animal veterinary hospital.
